1Lesson 1 — Newton's Laws in Action
Newton's second law: F_net = m·a. When you resolve forces along an inclined plane at angle θ, gravity splits into mg·sinθ (along the slope, driving motion) and mg·cosθ (perpendicular, giving the normal force). For a 5 kg block on a frictionless 30° slope: F_net = 5 · 9.8 · sin30° = 24.5 N, so a = 4.9 m/s² down the slope. Golden rule for full marks: always draw the free-body diagram BEFORE writing equations.
2Lesson 2 — Momentum & Impulse
Impulse Δp = F·Δt = m·Δv. A 0.15 kg cricket ball moving at 40 m/s is caught in 0.05 s. Change in momentum = 0.15 · (0 − 40) = −6 kg·m/s. Average force on the hand = −6 / 0.05 = −120 N. The negative sign means the force acts opposite to the ball's motion. Conservation of momentum applies only when the system is isolated (no external net force).
3Lesson 3 — Organic Chemistry: IUPAC Naming
Naming rules in order: (1) find the longest carbon chain containing the functional group, (2) number so the functional group gets the lowest locant, (3) name substituents alphabetically. Example: CH₃-CH(CH₃)-CH₂-CH₂-OH → 4 carbons in the main chain, OH on C1 → 3-methylbutan-1-ol. Alcohols end in -ol, ketones in -one, carboxylic acids in -oic acid.
4Lesson 4 — Stoichiometry & Limiting Reagent
For 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, given 4 mol H₂ and 1.5 mol O₂: the required ratio is 2:1, so 1.5 mol O₂ needs only 3 mol H₂. H₂ is in excess (1 mol excess), O₂ is the limiting reagent. Water produced = 2 · 1.5 = 3 mol = 54 g. Always identify the limiting reagent before calculating product mass.
